MOTORCYCLE SAFETY
Safety
and Advocacy Organizations
Because motorcycle accidents continue to end lives and devastate
families, numerous safety and advocacy organizations continue to
stress the dangers involved and promote awareness. One example of
an organization created to promote motorcycle safety and actively
reduce motorcycle injuries on the road is the California
Motorcycle Safety Program. The CMSP is primarily funded by California's
motorcyclists through a $2 fee from each new and renewed motorcycle
registration in the state. The California Highway Patrol administers
this legislatively-mandated program. As of July 1, 2001, more than
200,000 motorcycle riders have been trained by the program's California
Motorcycle Training network. The program began operating publicly
in July 1987. Since 1986, the number of annual motorcycle fatalities
has dropped over 70 percent, and motorcycle accidents also
have declined more than 70 percent. For more information on other
safety and advocacy groups like the CMSP, visit our Motorcycle
Organization, Injury and Safety Links section.
